In New Jersey, charter schools are free, public schools that are open to all children and typically offer their students more individualized attention, longer school days, longer school years, and innovative programs to meet the needs of the students in the communities they serve.

There are 56 operating charter schools in New Jersey serving approximately 16,500 students, and the vast majority of our children come from low-income households.

These uniquely accountable public schools, which are authorized and monitored by the NJ Department of Education, are created and sustained by the communities they serve.

Students from Adelaide L. Sanford Charter School, Greater Newark Charter School, Maria L. Varisco-Rogers Charter School, Marion P. Thomas Charter School, North Star Academy Charter School and Robert Treat Academy Charter School received certificates on May 7, 2008, after participating in the Newark Charter School Teach-In at City Hall in Newark. DOE Office of Charter Schools Manager Ken Figgs (back row, right) also attended, as did DOE Commissioner Lucille Davy, state Sen. Teresa Ruiz, Assemblyman Alberto Coutinho, Newark Councilwoman Dana Rone, and several teachers, parents and charter school supporters.
