In New Jersey, charter schools are free, public schools that are open to all children and typically offer their students more individualized attention, longer school days, longer school years, and innovative programs to meet the needs of the students in the communities they serve.

These uniquely accountable public schools, which are authorized and monitored by the NJ Department of Education, are created and sustained by the communities they serve.

For the 2009-10 school year, there are 67 operating charter schools in New Jersey serving just over 20,000 students, with the vast majority of our children coming from low-income households.
